Before enrolling in a yoga class it is often a good idea to check out the yoga teacher and evaluate whether that person is going to be able to teach you yoga or not. You may want to prepare a checklist against which to tick off positives and negatives in the makeup of the teacher and then decide accordingly. These could serve as a basis on which to decide whether to go ahead and learn from a particular teacher or not.

Check Out Against CALM Criteria

If the yoga teacher can meet the criteria of communication, assistance, listening as well as modification, or CALM, you will have found the right place and the right person to teach you yoga. The yoga teacher should be able to speak with you as well as the other students in a manner that is full of respect for one another, and he or she should also be open to answering any questions that may arise in the minds of the students.

A good yoga teacher would also be one that is compassionate and who can spare time to guide the students through meditation and also help them to relax. These are major areas within yoga and the teacher should be adept in teaching them. Beware of a teacher that simply wants to rush through the various aspects and is only interested in getting the workouts finished and done with.

The yoga teacher should also be a person that is caring about the student’s form and will provide all manner of assistance while teaching yoga, and will encourage the student into learning the skills. In addition, the student should also find that his or her queries are adequately answered, and that the teacher is attentive to their concerns. Also, the yoga teacher should change the exercise and modify it to suit the class and should also encourage letting the students use props, if required.

Feel Good Factor

Your yoga teacher should be pleasant to interact with, and not abusive or rude. A stern person that is also caring is preferable to one that is curt or insists on knowing everything that there is to know about yoga. He or she should earn the respect of the students and reciprocate the same to the students. The yoga class should have a feel-good factor that binds the class together and promotes harmony and a better learning curve.

The bottom line is that if the yoga teacher passes your criteria test of CALM then you may go ahead and commit to learning from that person. Otherwise, you will be better off looking around for a more appropriate instructor.

Outside of those few extremely dedicated yoga practitioners, few people know that there are actually entire retreats dedicated to yoga and learning more about yourself and expanding your yoga practice. Even fewer people know that you don’t need to have dedicated your life to yoga to go to a retreat—there are retreats from beginners all the way up through masters. And most of the time, they are all in the same place.

A yoga retreat is exactly what it sounds like—an extended stay away from home where the primary focus of the stay is on increasing your yogic abilities and releasing stress while meeting those with similar interests as yourself. Yoga retreats vary in price, but you can expect to spend what you would normally on a weeklong vacation in a hotel.

Most of the time, yoga retreats have include both room and board as many focus not only on physical activities, but also on how to fuel those activities, so they tend to have very specific foods they would like you to eat during the retreat. So, the price is typically all inclusive—you pay one price and that’s all.

Where to Find Yoga Retreats

You can find yoga retreats just about everywhere. From the east coast to the west coast there are a plethora of retreat locations, and thus there is mostly one relatively close to you. If you’d prefer to be at a little more exotic locale, there are yoga retreat locations in the Caribbean, Virgin Islands, Europe and Asia. Keep in mind though that these locations are likely to be significantly more expensive than a domestic retreat.

As with most things, the best resource for doing research on yoga retreats will be the internet. Check out www.yogasite.com as this website has a large list of yoga retreat locations around the world, and links to other online resources for you to continue your research and find the perfect retreat.

If you are interested in yoga, whether you’ve just begun or have been involved for years, a retreat is a good way to expand your knowledge and decide whether you want to pursue your yoga training. It should not be assumed that only certain fanatics go on yoga retreats, but rather realize that they are open to everyone to help those who have the desire to learn. Go ahead, enjoy yourself!

Yoga postures are called Asanas, literally meaning seats. Originally, the asanas were used as stable postures for prolonged meditation. These postures are not confined to just stretching of body parts but open, what the yogis believe, the energy channels (charkas) and psychic centers of the body. These purify the body and provide greater control and balance to the mind.

In practicing yoga postures, the breathing should be slow and deep. Usually Dirga (or Ujjiayi) or Pranayama style of breathing is performed. The positions of yoga are firm yet relaxed. So if you feel pain, strain or fatigue at any point, it is an indicator that all is not well with your postures. Consult your yoga instructor for improvement. Six important types of yoga postures are generally known, depending on the main position of the body: seated, standing, supine, prone, balance, twisting.

Seated Postures

Seated postures are especially suitable for the beginning level. Most of these are easily adapted to any level of body strength or flexibility. Seated postures make use of a variety of positions like Table, Dog Tilt, Cat Tilt, Staff, Inclined Plane, Seated Twist, Seated, Angle, Child, Caterpillar, Head to Knee, Prayer Squat, Low Lunge, Pigeon, Full Lotus, Hero, Crab, and Gate postures etc.

Standing Postures

Standing yoga postures are meant to enhance both strength and flexibility of the body. These postures are among the most advanced of asanas. Various standing postures include Five Pointed, Star, Dancer, Warrior Angle, Forward Fold, Side Plank, Half moon, Mountain, Goddess/Victory Squat, Jackknife, Standing Angle, Prayer Twist, Pyramid/Runners, Stretch, Tree, Standing Backbend, Triangle, Standing Squat, Warrior (having three main postures), and Eagle.

Supine Postures

These yoga postures are done while lying on the back with face up. These are great to end a session of the yoga practice. Supine postures release stress and bring flexibility. Knee Down Twist, Fish, Bridge, Plow, Wind Relieving, Half Wind Relieving, Half Supine Diamond, Supine Diamond, Wheel, Half Bridge etc. are some important supine postures.

Prone Postures

Prone postures are belly down postures. These build core body strength in the low back and abs. These postures are simple enough for beginning level but still quite challenging to hold long. Bow, Half Bow, Cobra, Frog Pose, Threading the Needle, Locust, Boat, and Crocodile are the most significant of prone postures.

Balancing Postures

Balancing postures are the key to improving memory and concentration by engaging the whole of your mind and body. Keeping the eyes focused on a single point is central to all of these yoga postures. Many postures are included in balancing the body like Warrior, Dancer, Eagle, Balancing Table, and Side Plank etc.

Twisting Postures

Twisting postures play a role in realigning and lengthening the spinal column, and also in stretching and opening of the back muscles. Prayer Twist, Seated Twist, Revolved Triangle, Knee Down Twist, Half Moon Twist etc. are the main positions in these postures.

If you are new to the world of yoga, finding instructional information could be a bit of an adventure. There are plenty of sources available such as online tutorials, how-to books, and the yoga centers in your local community. Take your time because the movements are very precise and include various positions you must pay attention to in order to understand the dynamics of it.

The way you understand your yoga instructions depends on the way you learn information in various ways. For instance, auditory learners prefer listening to sounds and visual learners prefer picture instructions. Most of the time you spend learning the aspects of yoga will involve taking a bit of research into consideration and following through once you’re in class.

Online Tutorials

Real-time tutorials are essential to getting a great understanding of what your instructors are talking about in class. Buying online tutorials or signing up could give you an insider’s view of what real yoga consists of. If you search online, the tutorials are more in-depth than a book can be but it gives some more interesting angles of the actions.

Tutorials with quizzes can help you understand yoga instructions at a whole different level. You will be able to apply the principles learned to your exercises and optimize your results. If the internet is not your best learning tool, look into the usefulness of yoga books or go to an actual center to discuss your needs with an instructor.

Books

A few places to find books include the library, book stores, and other resourceful places on the internet. Most of the books contain visuals just as the online tutorials and are suitable for people interested in reading more about the physical movements of all the exercises.

Yoga instructions are available in lists in most books I have read regarding yoga fitness. The layout is somewhat different then the online content, but it has a number of references available that most web sites lack – notes, tips, and “secrets” of the ages. If the value of the book excels your need of yoga instructions – you have gotten a grand deal out of the whole situation.

Yoga Centers

Yoga centers are the most valuable assets to yoga instructions. The instructor will give you some in-depth information just as the online tutorials and books, but it will be on a more personal level. Talk with your instructors about personalized plans you can enroll in to get the best benefits available at the yoga center. Some centers have speakers come along to talk about how yoga instructions are beneficial if added into everyday activities such as walking or lying down. Learning the basics is one thing, but looking into an outline perfect for you would be even better.

About Yoga Fitness.

With the emphasis today on health and fitness, we all seem to be re-evaluating how we stay fit. Some forms of exercise require almost a good level of fitness to even start. Then there are others like yoga fitness that can benefit all ages and all levels of fitness and health.

Yoga fitness will benefit you in many areas too numerous to mention the all here, but the top 10 in my opinion are

greater balance lower pulse rate, lower respiratory rate, improved cardiovascular functions, lower blood pressure, increased flexibility and range of motion, increased energy, lower weight, improved immune system, as well as improved coordination.

One of the best things about yoga fitness is, in the early stages of taking your yoga fitness class you will not have that soreness and muscle aches associated with other forms of fitness exercise. If you find you have some muscle aches, talk to your yoga fitness instructor as you may be doing something wrong. They can supervise your movements closer and guide you with the positions, poses and postures.

Yoga fitness is designed to benefit your body, mind and spirit. Once you start practising yoga you will become aware, after a short time, that piece of chocolate cake will not be as appealing as that lovely piece of fresh fruit. As your body adjusts to the new routines that you learn at your yoga fitness classes, this will happen more and more.

There is one very simple breathing exercise that you will learn and this will mean you will get a good night’s sleep, every night and wake up refreshed in the mornings. No more waking up and looking for that coffee to get you started, you will be able to have your coffee when you want it and enjoy it, not when you need it to get you going, no more being dependant on things like that.

There are some very simple yoga practices that you find become part of your daily routine, and you will perform them without even thinking about them as yoga fitness. This is the beauty of yoga and why the benefits for you involve your body, mind and spirit. Others will soon see you in a different light, you will have a healthy fitness about you and it will all be about yoga fitness.

So find your class and get yoga fit.

Why is Yoga Clothing so Important?

Although it may not seem like it at first, yoga clothing is perhaps one of the most important and truly essential purchases that you will have to make if you are planning on participating in a yoga or yoga-like activity. The reason that yoga clothing is so important is primarily due to the fact of the movement that is involved in yoga; you need clothing that will allow you to move and shift as you please, without straining and without having to feel uncomfortable in any way.

Yoga clothing is not expensive, and it is certainly not complicated by any means. In fact, yoga clothing is probably one of the simplest types of clothing that there is. There are many different styles of yoga clothing that you can choose from as well, and this usually consists of anything from sweat pants and shirts to spandex.

Spandex is easily the more popular choice, simply because it is tight to the body and so it does not drag or slow you down, and yet it is incredibly comfortable and moves exactly along with your body, almost like a second skin.

If you are wondering where you can go to purchase this clothing, there are in fact a multitude of options that are available to you. The best idea is to start your search at your local large retailers, such as a Sears or a Walmart, for example. The reason for this is because places like these will have a wide variety available, and it will all be at an incredibly reasonable price.

However, if you would prefer the more higher-end stores, you can always shop at department stores, but remember that you will most likely be paying a much steeper price here. As well, you can even shop online where you will find an incredulous multitude of options right at your fingertips, and if you like, you can even have your yoga clothes custom made for you; again though, there will be an increase in the price but if you are willing to pay more and this is what you want then go for it.

Remember that the most important thing here is comfort, and so no matter how good something may look, if it is not comfortable than it will not be of any good here. Comfort is key, and you can find clothing that is both comfortable and attractive.

What’s worse than trying to get into a full lotus when you haven’t stretched in about a week? It is trying to get into a full lotus in a pair of jeans and a button up shirt. In fact, it’s just about impossible to get into the more advanced yoga poses in street clothes—the flexibility of the body must be matched by the flexibility of the clothes.

For both the casual and the veteran yoga practitioner alike, proper apparel is imperative to getting the most out of your yoga experiences. That is not to say that you need to have some “yoga-certified” pieces of clothing in order to be properly decked out. Rather, the propriety of the clothes has to do more with intent than any particular designation.

What is the Intent of Yoga Clothes?

Yoga clothes has one primary purpose: to provide comfort to a person in a myriad of positions, being supportive at some times, moving to fit the body, and most of all, adjust to a person’s body. It is these traits that set the intent for clothing, and in a sense designate something as a piece of yoga clothes.

That being said, no particular brand of yoga clothes is better than another, and in fact yoga clothes can actually entail a wide variety of clothing intended for other activities. The main goal is simply to provide a dynamic piece of clothing that changes and adjusts as you do. Barefeetyoga.com has a wide variety of clothing specifically designed for yoga, thus it contains all of these traits.

However, that should not be considered the only option for clothing for your yoga practice. In fact, aerobics pants work very well as yoga pants, as do polyester blend track pants. A variety of other athletic pants and shirts all work well, and the added technology of athletic clothing means you’ll stay dryer as at times your yoga practice can get intense and you will be glad for the added wicking technology.

Essentially, anything will do for yoga clothes as long as it is breathes and moves. But, finding the right clothing for you can be difficult. Barefootyoga.com is a great place to start looking for yoga specific clothing, but Nike, Reebok, Adidas, and essentially any other major sporting good company will always have yoga clothes for purchase, at prices that suit all budgets.

Yoga can easily be described as being one of the most popular and well-known exercise activities in the world today, and its popularity has increased the most dramatically recently, in particular over the last decade or so. Yoga is a truly fulfilling, enjoyable, and beneficial activity, and can be practiced by practically anyone, regardless of their age, health, or fitness level.

Where can I Find a Yoga Class?

If you are looking to sign up for a yoga class but don’t know where to go or where to start first, the best idea is to go to your local gym and ask the instructors or even the manager of the gym if they know or have any information that you could use to get you started. Odds are that you will find your answers here, and that you will be able to get as much information as you need helpfully and friendly.

However, if you do not find the answers that you were looking for there in regards to your yoga class questions or, if you simply want to know a bit more information on your own, then the next best idea would be to use a tool such as the Internet.

The Internet can be incredibly useful primarily due to the fact of its speed and efficiency that allows you to quickly and easily browse through a multitude of options, allowing for a quick response to all of your questions.

Due to the popularity of yoga, you should be able to find a yoga class near you in fact you should be able to find an entire location, such as a school for instance, where all they do is practice yoga. In fact, if possible, you will want to take your yoga class at this type of place, because they are specifically designed around the art of yoga, and so you know that they will surely know what they are talking about, when compared to a gym where they may only offer one or two classes.

Regardless of what you end up doing, the most important thing to remember is that of the health benefits and advantages that you will be receiving from participating in yoga. Yoga is quite easily one of the most beneficial forms of activity that you can participate in, as the rewards that you can reap are more life-long and fulfilling than practically any other exercise.

Yoga therapy for better health. This article briefly takes a look at how yoga can be used a a form of therapy. One example of this is the yoga breathing techniques. With the regular form of exercise, breathing does play a part, but not as much as with yoga. You learn to breath the correct way with your yoga practice and this makes all the difference to helping you stay in better health.

Yoga Therapy for the Mind

Yoga also provides invaluable health benefits for your mental health, so not just your body but your mind too. Pranayama (or control over breathing) has been found a great form of yoga therapy for checking negative emotions. Clinical evidence reveals that alternate nostril breathing, as practiced in yoga, creates a positive balance in the two hemispheres of the brain and the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Yoga therapy, based on breathing, also lightens the mood, relieves somberness, and restores mental energy. In fact, yogis regard psychotherapy as the modern form of yoga therapy.

Breathing, Simple Yoga Therapy

Yoga breathing exercises are invaluable and to get the benefits need not take hours of practice a day. You only need a few minutes and this will keep your mind and body healthy. The following is a series of breathing exercises that will only take you about six minutes to complete and yet you will feel an improvement in your energy level. A word of warning, this exercise should not be performed by anyone suffering from cervical problems.

1. Start by resting your arms on the sides. 2. Rotate your shoulders, first clockwise and then counterclockwise, five times each. 3. Bend your head as if trying to touch the shoulders. 4. Repeat it five times on each side. 5. Keep the neck erect and, while bending forward, press the chin against the neck. 6. Now close your eyes and let your mind relax. 7. Breathe normally, while remaining conscious to the inhalation and exhalation. 8. Feel the movements of your breathing. 9. Closing your eyes, take deep gentle breaths. 10.Feel the incoming air from the bottom i.e. stomach upwards to the top of the lungs. 11.Now exhale the air, letting it out first from the top and then downward from the stomach. 12.Repeat this ten times, using ‘imagination of breathing in fresh oxygen’. Remember, that a standing position is best for this exercise. This technique is wonderfully de-stressing.

These breathing exercises are so easy to do, take so little time and the benefits to you can be felt for such a long time.

Yoga Retreats A Vacation With A Difference

Yoga retreats are wonderful places where anyone practicing yoga can go to learn more about yoga and yourself. These retreats cater to all, from the beginner to the masters. Not many people realize these yoga retreats are available to the novice.

How about a stay away from home where the focus is on increasing your yoga abilities, getting rid of stress and enjoying it with like minded people. This is the intent of yoga retreats, they are run by professionals who know what they are doing and can help you to get the most from your yoga practices.

The prices of these retreats vary. You could reasonably expect to pay the equivialent of a week’s stay in vacation type hotel. The cost will include your room and meals as they take the approach that your diet has a very important part to play in your overall yoga activities. They hope to teach you how to eat correctly and so benefit more from your yoga practices. So the cost is all inclusive, your room, meals and yoga lessons, activities and access to the yoga instructors for help and guidance.

How To Go About Finding Yoga Retreats

There are may number of yoga retreats across the counrty. From the east coast to the west coast there are plenty of retreat locations, and so there should be one relatively close to you. If you’d prefer to be at a more exotic location, there are yoga retreats in the Caribbean, Virgin Islands, Europe and Asia. Keep in mind though these locations are likely to be more expensive than a domestic yoga retreat.

The best place to start your search for a yoga retreat is with your yoga studio. There could even be some great packages available. Often times the studio will negotiate for a group booking, which could be a big saving and you will be with others you know.

The other option is the internet. If you do a search online for yoga retreats in the USA, yoga retreats in Costa Rica, find a yoga retreat in Connecticut or wherever you happen to live then you can investigate what is available and what is provided during the retreat.

By going to a yoga retreat, whether you have just started yoga or wanting to expand your knowledge, will benefit you enormously. Yoga retreats are open to all who partake in yoga and have been established to enhance the yoga experience for all. If you can manage the time go ahead and indulge yourself, you won’t regret it.
