Some ancient practices of the Hindu religion which is largely based in India have become very popular in many different places around the world. The ancient practices of yoga are now enjoyed by many different people who have little or no understanding of the ancient religion. These people practice yoga positions that are a part of the philosophy of the Hindu religion. This ancient set of rituals can help people become more flexible and more mentally calm. The yoga positions help people feel a great sense of serenity. There are many different positions in yoga, and most beginners will start by performing a limited number of these yoga positions.

Yoga positions are dedicated to helping people stretch their spine for better balance, posture and fitness. The positions in yoga often have strange names including dog and cobra. The yoga positions can be first demonstrated by an instructor in a studio or on a videotape. The people who practice yoga positions under the guidance of an instructor in person have the advantage of guidance from the instruction throughout the session. The yoga positions have a large range of complexity. One position calls for a headstand which is best left until the student has made significant progress.

Yoga Positions Provide For Gradual Success

None of the yoga positions should be forced. Students do not want injuries so slow and steady progress is important. Each student should never do a yoga position that causes pain. Many instructors will encourage the students to work slowly and carefully. The beneficial effects of yoga are not noticed over night. The positions often get better constantly, but there is always more progress to be made in yoga. Most people who practice the positions required in a yoga session are very enthusiastic about the results. Yoga students are usually stronger, more flexible and content after a number of yoga sessions.

Each and every position in yoga is done for specific benefits. There are positions that are specifically for the spine. The yoga exercises work to strengthen the spine for better overall health. Other positions are used to improve balance and stability for each person. There are positions that increase the strength of those in each session. Yoga provides exercises for physical fitness, but there are also yoga practices to improve the state of the mind. Fortunately, the yoga exercises often help people feel more self-confident because the yoga has helped them

Yoga is a relaxing form of exercise that combines deep stretching with meditation. To perform these stretches most people are comfortable in specially designed yoga clothes. Yoga clothes are different from most other exercise attire because they are snug fitting cotton material except around the calves; most yoga pants are loose around the calves or ankles.

Because yoga is so relaxing and uses stretching to naturally regulate mood, yoga is also often associated with organic or natural fibered products. Yoga clothes will use combinations of ultra soft all natural cotton and hemp products to give the wearer a one of a kind feel. Most yoga clothes will look like most other athletic or leisure clothing – comfortable and fashionable. Yoga clothes can also be found in velvets or synthetic blends for every day wear.

For Women

Yoga clothes are available in the largest selection for women. There are several varieties of stylish tops including tank tops, sport strapped tops, long fit tank tops or tee shirts, and more depending on the brand. The key with yoga clothes is always comfort.

Yoga bottoms for women are also comfortable and fashionable. Most yoga clothes are straight lines and slight flairs. Yoga bottoms are no exception; most of the pants are straight legged with a slight flare at the ankles. The yoga capris are also straight legged but they will usually flare at or just below the knee.

For Men

Men’s yoga clothes will usually consist of long shorts (just below the knee), straight legged pants, tee shirts, and tank tops. These are usually made of pure cotton or hemp materials. Also because comfort is very important they are washed to be ultra soft.

Men’s yoga clothing also extends to outer wear, there are hooded sweatshirts and fleece jackets that are practical for exercising or practicing yoga poses. The colors are usually very neutral for men and can coordinate with his existing wardrobe.

Kids

Though few babies will practice yoga poses, there are yoga clothing options available for babies and kids. Perhaps it is mire of a fashion statement to have mommy-and-me outfits. For babies there are ultra soft one piece body suits; many have a picture of a yoga pose on the front of the one piece.

Baby yoga pants are very comfortable for children, whether crawling or beginning to learn yoga poses for them selves! The materials are all natural and most children find yoga clothing more comfortable than other types of sports wear.

Yoga clothing is soft, comfortable, stylish and available for every member of the family. Yoga is also practical for an entire family, the gentle motions are ideal for mental and physical well being.

Yoga is more popular than ever before. There are many programs for those interested in practicing the poses of yoga. There are many different forms of yoga, and the poses practiced by all of these people are just one form of yoga. This is part of the philosophy of the Hindu religion, and this philosophy has been around for thousands of years. This ancient philosophy was established in the books of the Hindu religion. Although the millions who practice yoga poses base their practice on part of this philosophy, this ancient practice is based on the physiological part of the philosophy.

The spiritual component of this philosophy is practiced, but it is practiced by fewer people than the physiological form. Inside India where the Hindu religion has many followers, many people practice both forms of this philosophy while those outside of India usually just practice the physiological poses or asanas. All of the practices of yoga are meant to foster great consciousness. Many of the people who practice the policies of this philosophy believe that they have achieved great consciousness through their practices. The enthusiasm of those who participate has led to the increased popularity of these ancient Indian practices.

Yoga Brings Flexibility To Those Who Use The Techniques

The practice of physiological yoga has become very popular in the West. Many people go to studios to study this with instruction by people who are trained to do the poses. The studios usually accommodate a group of people who work on mats that they place on the floor. The instructor demonstrates the poses for the students, and then moves about to make sure that the students are doing the poses correctly. These students start with a few poses and then add more to their routines. Some of the routines are more difficult than other routines.

Many other people practice the physiological poses of yoga by following instructions on television or video tape. The instructors do not get to move around to their students because they are at a distance, but the instruction can be very effective. The yoga poses are usually demonstrated by the instructors, and the students follow them to the best of their ability on their own. The yoga poses are a series of positions that are assumed by the student. These people then hold these poses for an appropriate amount of time.

You would certainly need to go back many millennia to find out the origins of yoga, which is an ancient practice that has been practiced in India and which signifies a union, or a way of doing things. According to whatever history of yoga is available, it is believed that it was an Indian sage named Patanjali who was the first to make a complete guide on yoga.

Yoga Sutra – The Basis of Modern Yoga

According to the early history of yoga, it is a book called Yoga Sutra that was written as many as 2000 years ago that is thought to be the basis for the yoga that is being practiced today. The Yoga Sutra contained eight limbs of yoga. In fact, yoga is know to have branched off in many directions and you can find forms of yoga that delve into meditation, or on channeling emotions and there is something to suit every person’s needs and preferences.

The trouble with studying the history of yoga is that there are many periods where the thread is broken due to the very nature of recording how yoga was practiced. Because of oral transmissions pertaining to sacred texts as well as the inherent secrecy contained in early teachings, the history of yoga from ancient times is somewhat unclear. Nevertheless, there are known to have been early recordings of yoga that date back more than 5000 years.

Four Periods

There is no doubting the fact that the history of yoga is rich, and it has four main periods in which it has developed as well as innovated. The earliest known beginnings of yoga can be traced to the Pre-Classical Period that goes back more than 5000 years. Then is the Classical Period when yoga was systemized and was written down in ancient India about the time of the second century, and this is when the noted sage named Patanjali organized yoga practice into the “eight limbed path.”

The history of yoga progressed further into the Post-Classical Period and this came about a few hundred years after Patanjali, and it was a time when the masters of yoga created many different practices that were meant to rejuvenate the body as well help a person to live longer. In fact, this was a time when the teachings of the sages that preceded them were rejected and the physical body became the focus of attention in order to gain enlightenment.

Yoga as we know it today is that part of the history of yoga that is referred to as the Modern Period and dates to about the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century. This was a time when the masters of yoga could travel to distant places including the Western world and taught this form of exercise to distant audiences. The early 20th century saw a transformation in the history of yoga when hatha yoga began to find prominence in India and it was embodied most noticeably in the works of T. Krishnamacharya. It then saw another change with the opening of the yoga studio in Hollywood in 1947 by a woman named Indra Devi and the story goes on to where we see yoga today.

Outside of those few extremely dedicated yoga practitioners, few people know that there are actually entire retreats dedicated to yoga and learning more about yourself and expanding your yoga practice. Even fewer people know that you don’t need to have dedicated your life to yoga to go to a retreat—there are retreats from beginners all the way up through masters. And most of the time, they are all in the same place.

A yoga retreat is exactly what it sounds like—an extended stay away from home where the primary focus of the stay is on increasing your yogic abilities and releasing stress while meeting those with similar interests as yourself. Yoga retreats vary in price, but you can expect to spend what you would normally on a weeklong vacation in a hotel.

Most of the time, yoga retreats have include both room and board as many focus not only on physical activities, but also on how to fuel those activities, so they tend to have very specific foods they would like you to eat during the retreat. So, the price is typically all inclusive—you pay one price and that’s all.

Where to Find Yoga Retreats

You can find yoga retreats just about everywhere. From the east coast to the west coast there are a plethora of retreat locations, and thus there is mostly one relatively close to you. If you’d prefer to be at a little more exotic locale, there are yoga retreat locations in the Caribbean, Virgin Islands, Europe and Asia. Keep in mind though that these locations are likely to be significantly more expensive than a domestic retreat.

As with most things, the best resource for doing research on yoga retreats will be the internet. Check out www.yogasite.com as this website has a large list of yoga retreat locations around the world, and links to other online resources for you to continue your research and find the perfect retreat.

If you are interested in yoga, whether you’ve just begun or have been involved for years, a retreat is a good way to expand your knowledge and decide whether you want to pursue your yoga training. It should not be assumed that only certain fanatics go on yoga retreats, but rather realize that they are open to everyone to help those who have the desire to learn. Go ahead, enjoy yourself!

Yoga postures are called Asanas, literally meaning seats. Originally, the asanas were used as stable postures for prolonged meditation. These postures are not confined to just stretching of body parts but open, what the yogis believe, the energy channels (charkas) and psychic centers of the body. These purify the body and provide greater control and balance to the mind.

In practicing yoga postures, the breathing should be slow and deep. Usually Dirga (or Ujjiayi) or Pranayama style of breathing is performed. The positions of yoga are firm yet relaxed. So if you feel pain, strain or fatigue at any point, it is an indicator that all is not well with your postures. Consult your yoga instructor for improvement. Six important types of yoga postures are generally known, depending on the main position of the body: seated, standing, supine, prone, balance, twisting.

Seated Postures

Seated postures are especially suitable for the beginning level. Most of these are easily adapted to any level of body strength or flexibility. Seated postures make use of a variety of positions like Table, Dog Tilt, Cat Tilt, Staff, Inclined Plane, Seated Twist, Seated, Angle, Child, Caterpillar, Head to Knee, Prayer Squat, Low Lunge, Pigeon, Full Lotus, Hero, Crab, and Gate postures etc.

Standing Postures

Standing yoga postures are meant to enhance both strength and flexibility of the body. These postures are among the most advanced of asanas. Various standing postures include Five Pointed, Star, Dancer, Warrior Angle, Forward Fold, Side Plank, Half moon, Mountain, Goddess/Victory Squat, Jackknife, Standing Angle, Prayer Twist, Pyramid/Runners, Stretch, Tree, Standing Backbend, Triangle, Standing Squat, Warrior (having three main postures), and Eagle.

Supine Postures

These yoga postures are done while lying on the back with face up. These are great to end a session of the yoga practice. Supine postures release stress and bring flexibility. Knee Down Twist, Fish, Bridge, Plow, Wind Relieving, Half Wind Relieving, Half Supine Diamond, Supine Diamond, Wheel, Half Bridge etc. are some important supine postures.

Prone Postures

Prone postures are belly down postures. These build core body strength in the low back and abs. These postures are simple enough for beginning level but still quite challenging to hold long. Bow, Half Bow, Cobra, Frog Pose, Threading the Needle, Locust, Boat, and Crocodile are the most significant of prone postures.

Balancing Postures

Balancing postures are the key to improving memory and concentration by engaging the whole of your mind and body. Keeping the eyes focused on a single point is central to all of these yoga postures. Many postures are included in balancing the body like Warrior, Dancer, Eagle, Balancing Table, and Side Plank etc.

Twisting Postures

Twisting postures play a role in realigning and lengthening the spinal column, and also in stretching and opening of the back muscles. Prayer Twist, Seated Twist, Revolved Triangle, Knee Down Twist, Half Moon Twist etc. are the main positions in these postures.

If you are new to the world of yoga, finding instructional information could be a bit of an adventure. There are plenty of sources available such as online tutorials, how-to books, and the yoga centers in your local community. Take your time because the movements are very precise and include various positions you must pay attention to in order to understand the dynamics of it.

The way you understand your yoga instructions depends on the way you learn information in various ways. For instance, auditory learners prefer listening to sounds and visual learners prefer picture instructions. Most of the time you spend learning the aspects of yoga will involve taking a bit of research into consideration and following through once you’re in class.

Online Tutorials

Real-time tutorials are essential to getting a great understanding of what your instructors are talking about in class. Buying online tutorials or signing up could give you an insider’s view of what real yoga consists of. If you search online, the tutorials are more in-depth than a book can be but it gives some more interesting angles of the actions.

Tutorials with quizzes can help you understand yoga instructions at a whole different level. You will be able to apply the principles learned to your exercises and optimize your results. If the internet is not your best learning tool, look into the usefulness of yoga books or go to an actual center to discuss your needs with an instructor.

Books

A few places to find books include the library, book stores, and other resourceful places on the internet. Most of the books contain visuals just as the online tutorials and are suitable for people interested in reading more about the physical movements of all the exercises.

Yoga instructions are available in lists in most books I have read regarding yoga fitness. The layout is somewhat different then the online content, but it has a number of references available that most web sites lack – notes, tips, and “secrets” of the ages. If the value of the book excels your need of yoga instructions – you have gotten a grand deal out of the whole situation.

Yoga Centers

Yoga centers are the most valuable assets to yoga instructions. The instructor will give you some in-depth information just as the online tutorials and books, but it will be on a more personal level. Talk with your instructors about personalized plans you can enroll in to get the best benefits available at the yoga center. Some centers have speakers come along to talk about how yoga instructions are beneficial if added into everyday activities such as walking or lying down. Learning the basics is one thing, but looking into an outline perfect for you would be even better.

About Yoga Fitness.

With the emphasis today on health and fitness, we all seem to be re-evaluating how we stay fit. Some forms of exercise require almost a good level of fitness to even start. Then there are others like yoga fitness that can benefit all ages and all levels of fitness and health.

Yoga fitness will benefit you in many areas too numerous to mention the all here, but the top 10 in my opinion are

greater balance lower pulse rate, lower respiratory rate, improved cardiovascular functions, lower blood pressure, increased flexibility and range of motion, increased energy, lower weight, improved immune system, as well as improved coordination.

One of the best things about yoga fitness is, in the early stages of taking your yoga fitness class you will not have that soreness and muscle aches associated with other forms of fitness exercise. If you find you have some muscle aches, talk to your yoga fitness instructor as you may be doing something wrong. They can supervise your movements closer and guide you with the positions, poses and postures.

Yoga fitness is designed to benefit your body, mind and spirit. Once you start practising yoga you will become aware, after a short time, that piece of chocolate cake will not be as appealing as that lovely piece of fresh fruit. As your body adjusts to the new routines that you learn at your yoga fitness classes, this will happen more and more.

There is one very simple breathing exercise that you will learn and this will mean you will get a good night’s sleep, every night and wake up refreshed in the mornings. No more waking up and looking for that coffee to get you started, you will be able to have your coffee when you want it and enjoy it, not when you need it to get you going, no more being dependant on things like that.

There are some very simple yoga practices that you find become part of your daily routine, and you will perform them without even thinking about them as yoga fitness. This is the beauty of yoga and why the benefits for you involve your body, mind and spirit. Others will soon see you in a different light, you will have a healthy fitness about you and it will all be about yoga fitness.

So find your class and get yoga fit.

Why is Yoga Clothing so Important?

Although it may not seem like it at first, yoga clothing is perhaps one of the most important and truly essential purchases that you will have to make if you are planning on participating in a yoga or yoga-like activity. The reason that yoga clothing is so important is primarily due to the fact of the movement that is involved in yoga; you need clothing that will allow you to move and shift as you please, without straining and without having to feel uncomfortable in any way.

Yoga clothing is not expensive, and it is certainly not complicated by any means. In fact, yoga clothing is probably one of the simplest types of clothing that there is. There are many different styles of yoga clothing that you can choose from as well, and this usually consists of anything from sweat pants and shirts to spandex.

<A HREF=”http://ws.amazon.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&MarketPlace=US&ID=V20070822%2FUS%2Fyogaionlin-21%2F8010%2Fbdb713e2-7a08-4492-8a4c-4d2a2b2be2c9&Operation=NoScript” mce_HREF=”http://ws.amazon.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;ID=V20070822%2FUS%2Fyogaionlin-21%2F8010%2Fbdb713e2-7a08-4492-8a4c-4d2a2b2be2c9&amp;Operation=NoScript”>Amazon.com Widgets</A>

Spandex is easily the more popular choice, simply because it is tight to the body and so it does not drag or slow you down, and yet it is incredibly comfortable and moves exactly along with your body, almost like a second skin.

If you are wondering where you can go to purchase this clothing, there are in fact a multitude of options that are available to you. The best idea is to start your search at your local large retailers, such as a Sears or a Walmart, for example. The reason for this is because places like these will have a wide variety available, and it will all be at an incredibly reasonable price.

However, if you would prefer the more higher-end stores, you can always shop at department stores, but remember that you will most likely be paying a much steeper price here. As well, you can even shop online where you will find an incredulous multitude of options right at your fingertips, and if you like, you can even have your yoga clothes custom made for you; again though, there will be an increase in the price but if you are willing to pay more and this is what you want then go for it.

Remember that the most important thing here is comfort, and so no matter how good something may look, if it is not comfortable than it will not be of any good here. Comfort is key, and you can find clothing that is both comfortable and attractive.

What’s worse than trying to get into a full lotus when you haven’t stretched in about a week? It is trying to get into a full lotus in a pair of jeans and a button up shirt. In fact, it’s just about impossible to get into the more advanced yoga poses in street clothes—the flexibility of the body must be matched by the flexibility of the clothes.

For both the casual and the veteran yoga practitioner alike, proper apparel is imperative to getting the most out of your yoga experiences. That is not to say that you need to have some “yoga-certified” pieces of clothing in order to be properly decked out. Rather, the propriety of the clothes has to do more with intent than any particular designation.

What is the Intent of Yoga Clothes?

Yoga clothes has one primary purpose: to provide comfort to a person in a myriad of positions, being supportive at some times, moving to fit the body, and most of all, adjust to a person’s body. It is these traits that set the intent for clothing, and in a sense designate something as a piece of yoga clothes.

That being said, no particular brand of yoga clothes is better than another, and in fact yoga clothes can actually entail a wide variety of clothing intended for other activities. The main goal is simply to provide a dynamic piece of clothing that changes and adjusts as you do. Barefeetyoga.com has a wide variety of clothing specifically designed for yoga, thus it contains all of these traits.

However, that should not be considered the only option for clothing for your yoga practice. In fact, aerobics pants work very well as yoga pants, as do polyester blend track pants. A variety of other athletic pants and shirts all work well, and the added technology of athletic clothing means you’ll stay dryer as at times your yoga practice can get intense and you will be glad for the added wicking technology.

Essentially, anything will do for yoga clothes as long as it is breathes and moves. But, finding the right clothing for you can be difficult. Barefootyoga.com is a great place to start looking for yoga specific clothing, but Nike, Reebok, Adidas, and essentially any other major sporting good company will always have yoga clothes for purchase, at prices that suit all budgets.
